douglasmartini asked: Hahaha. I only lived in Texas for MAYBE a year or two. I don't even remember what Texas was like.

Doesn’t count.  Lone Star 4 Life, cowboy.

andrewtsks asked: Just as a general comment: it is truly amazing how little we agree on, musically. I think I enjoy reading your stuff even more because of that fact though.
And the Brand New post from the other day was amazing, so that makes up for it all, really.

Thanks. We probably don’t disagree on quite so much as you think though. I began following you for your posts on emo (e.g. this and this), a genre it’s far too rare to find people writing seriously about. I’m younger than you are, so reading your stuff is like having access to the old head I didn’t have around when I was getting into this stuff by reading reviews of the bands Pitchfork panned.

I used to write a lot more about emo a few years back, but it seems I scratched that itch for a while and have moved on to other things.

Besides, we’ll always have GaGa.

I’ve known you more than twelve months now, Erin. Careful observation?
(If you follow me and don’t follow Erin, you should probably add one more Tumblr to your feed. Yes, she’s annoying and bossy and an unbearable know-it-all, but… actually, I don’t know how to finish that sentence.)

Oh, Canada.

Did you watch the Canadian TV show with Sarah Polley as Ramona? As a Cleary devotee, I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the adaptation…

No… this is a thing? BRB, investigating.

Miley, John, and Yoko.

douglasmartini replied to your quoteOK, but let’s talk about Miley Cyrus. Who is,…

I think this is the greatest thing I’ve ever read about an artist that I’m not at all interested in.

Hey, I’m hanging out for dude’s next post on his Russian history blog. Don’t let it be said I don’t know what you mean.

andrewtsks replied to your postIt’s kind of amazing they’ve managed to keep up the charade for so many years, actually.

Yoko wasn’t naked. Just John. I’M JUST SAYIN.

I could be a shit and be like, “naw, I was talking about this one,” but yeah, you right. Oops.

I took two courses in Early American history less than a year ago and I couldn’t have done much better.

Now it’s my turn as an American to do a history of Australia from memory: 17something, I think: prison colony late 1970s: Mad Max, Radio Birdman

Well, I must admit I had the advantage of being tutored by The Simpsons and Alvin and the Chipmunks as a child.

Nate, I probably couldn’t do much better than your effort. Except I’d at least tack on Kylie Minogue at the end!

If only Atomic County were real.

You’re just missing out on a lot of great stuff for no reason, that’s all. Plus, shitloads of the tvtropes links are actually based on comic books rather than tv.

True, of course, but I’ll always need something to prove I’m not a nerd, and this is much better than “At least I’m not a furry.”

It could also have been “At least I don’t watch Buffy*,” “At least i don’t play WoW,” or “at least I’ve never heard a complete Rush album.”

F’real though, I’m sure comic books can be way awesome, but they’ve always seemed boyish and stupid in exactly the way I don’t like things to be boyish or stupid. That said, I’ve read Ghost World and The Dark Knight Returns, and didn’t dislike either, though I enjoyed the former much more than the latter. I was also mildly intrigued by whatever that recent comic book was about music nerds, though I couldn’t actually bring myself to pay money for it, considering the fact that I’m poor and also I much prefer to buy books without pictures, no snark.

Also, I’ve been known to enjoy all of the following, some or all of which may suggest a susceptibility to comic books: The Incredibles, American Splendor (the movie), “Futurama,” the trailers for Scott Pilgrim, the Discworld series, The Boondocks (in both television and strip form), The Dark Knight, and the Simpsons’ joke about Casper being the ghost of Richie Rich.

Now. Enough talk about my nerdery. Don’t any of y’all even think I’m going to get around to do something really nerdy like reveal the name of my favorite anime series.

Oh yes, it’s real. And it will never come up on Screw Rock ‘n’ Roll. It’s the one exception to my “no guilty pleasures” thing.

*Erin tells me I’d love this, and she’s usually right about this kind of thing, goddammit.

I was destined to have to explain this.

I knew that as soon as I posted it. But I just couldn’t resist posting the quote into the scrapbook and tagging it with a glib comment. What do they say about people who know the result and do it anyway?

Are religious people not allowed to be sensible about cause and effect?

Well, it specifically only rules out those who believe in providence. Especially of the sort that helps sports people and politicians.

But in general, I think the kind of understanding exhibited by the quote of the way people’s psychology and solipsism affects their understanding of the world, properly applied, makes pretty much any religious interpretation of existence untenable.

EDIT: I tried softening my original comment by turning the period into an ellipsis.

FUN FACT: Whether that worked or not, and why, is way more interesting than discussions about religion!

Re your last question - ask the Australian owner! By every account it’s his idea.

I think it’s very important to note that Rupert Murdoch is an American citizen, and only an American citizen. He ceased to be an Australian in 1985 when he became an American.[1]

That said, the firewall does indeed seem to be the American owner’s idea, and I have no idea why he would think it sensible to implement such a thing for his non-American papers. (Or his American papers for that matter, but that’s a slightly different argument.)

I think I’m saying that Tom sort of has a point?

——

1. I have Opinions[2] about the no longer extant requirement that an Australian relinquish his citizenship to gain citizenship of another country, but nonetheless, Murdoch became an American with full knowledge of what he was giving up, and he chose to surrender his citizenship regardless.

2. Of course I do.
