Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I: Deleted Scene
“I don’t think you’re a waste of space”
This was my chief complaint about this movie. That this scene wasn’t there.
AWWWW and he did it RIGHT, too! They’d better release an extended edition with all this stuff slotted back in. DON’T CARE IF IT’S FIVE HOURS LONG, WILL WATCH REPEATEDLY.
So I kinda roll against the norm, I think, in that I do NOT want Dudley to have magical kids and have him and Harry hang out at Platform 9 & 3/4 in 19 years? I want Dudley to stay totally mundane, regular kids, generally average wife, basically happy with maybe a therapy session or twelve about his parents. But I want him to know about the magic, and just having that knowledge pushes him to be a more creative, accepting, thoughtful person.
So you have a Dudley that takes Petunia’s jealousy and hideousness and *inverts* it. He’s a muggle, but he doesn’t let that STOP him; he searches for Harry and maybe pulls him back out into the muggle world for the occasional visit, and keeps Harry from retreating so completely into the magical world as to never appear in it again. There’s a particular interpretation you can make of the HP books that it’s actually about a runaway who gets wrapped up in a life of insanity, drugs & terror, and never comes back, eventually dying and releasing himself completely to his fantasies. Keeping Dudley mundane removes this interpretation in a lot of ways, gives it a less fantastic edge yet somehow makes the magic more real.
Also what Mizu says.
