There’s this certain type of female pop star…
…whose detractors don’t merely think her music is bad; they think the very being of the star herself is bad. There’s this strange fury to the denunciations, a disgust that someone allows this woman to even exist.
Examples:
- Lana Del Rey
- Kreayshawn
- Lady Gaga
- Taylor Swift
- Katy Perry
It used to happen with Britney. Miley got it a bit.
Does it happen with men? I think it does with Skrillex. Limp Bizkit and Nickelback got it, though with those it’s more a distant disdain than intense rage. Justin Bieber gets it from the general public, but less so from critics. (That’s because Bieber makes music that people think is for teenage girls, though it’s actually for pre-teen girls.) Chris Brown gets it, but he beat a woman, which is something quite different to giving a bad performance on a late night weekend sketch comedy show.
