Toronto’s official city logo is an owl?
The billboard is Drake’s work. Via NPR (h/t Michelle):
Drake grew up in a wealthy Toronto suburb called Forest Hill … [co-founder and executive director of Toronto’s Remix Project Gavin] Sheppard thinks that Drake embodies the state of in-between-ness that is constantly being navigated in Toronto — what he calls “a schismatic and at the same time cohesive city.” Many Toronto residents are first-generation immigrants. “Drake intiutively understands that, being of mixed race.”
If you dislike him, disregard that Drake is the subject here. I’m interested in what this dude is saying about Toronto.
As for the picture: I like when rappers do this. When I went to Detroit in 2005, on my way from the airport to Livonia, where I was staying, I caught an Eminem-sponsored billboard welcoming visitors to the Motor City. I visited the Motown museum, but I like it when a city’s musical heritage is palpable as a present phenomenon as well as one kept under glass on display.
EDIT: Yo, look up Forest Hill on Streetview. Drake’s old hood is nice.
